The European Philanthropy Association, Philea, through the European Environmental Funders Group (EEFG), has launched a new survey to assess the evolution of European foundations’ contributions to environmental projects. The aim is to provide an overview of philanthropic giving in this field and to prepare the seventh edition of its report Environmental Funding by European Foundations, a resource that tracks how EU philanthropy supports environmental action.
Foundation representatives have until 30 September to complete the survey. To do so, they should contact Giulia Lombardi, Senior Manager for Climate Programmes and Partnerships at the organisation.
According to Philea, monitoring funding patterns and support for the environment enables the sector to understand priorities, gaps, and opportunities for greater impact in this area.
For this reason, the mapping exercise is not only a matter of data collection, but also a tool to help foundations, policymakers, and researchers gain a clearer understanding of the current landscape, identify opportunities, and strengthen the collective impact of foundations on climate action.
The survey builds on the sixth edition, based on 2021 data, which analysed 8,518 environmental grants from 126 major foundations, amounting to €1.6 billion in funding. These figures doubled those recorded in the previous edition, reflecting the growing commitment of European philanthropy to environmental causes.
