Moving towards a Social and Solidarity Economy with a gender approach

"Among the many topics currently addressed by research in Social Economy, one has emerged strongly in the last decade, namely the gender approach, in line with the growing general interest in understanding and contributing to the actual situation of equality between men and women in society. This has been highlighted in a series of published works, showing once again the particular sensitivity of researchers not only to the social economy, - an interest that in itself already denotes a more humanistic character of the researcher -, but also to the specific problems of gender, filling the gaps in research that, until recently, had hardly been devoted to this subject."

Highlights

Social Economy Europe and the European Parliament's Social Economy Intergroup call on Member States to adopt the European Commission's Recommendation in favour of this business model

This was made clear on 12 September during the session held by the Social Economy Intergroup of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Institutions, governments and Social Economy organisations are working to ensure that this Recommendation is approved within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the EU and presented at the European Social Economy Conference to be held in San Sebastian on 13 and 14 November.

UN Secretary-General calls governments to support and strengthen cooperative the entrepreneurial ecosystems for cooperatives

The United Nations Secretary-General's 2023 report on cooperatives in social development has been released. In the report, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres applauds how cooperatives promote sustainable development. In this context, Antonio Guterres recommends governments to help cooperatives to become "successful business enterprises" using the ecosystem approach to entrepreneurship.

CIRIEC together with Euricse is carrying out a statistical report on the social economy in the EU, funded by the European Commission in the framework of the European Action Plan for the Social Economy

CIRIEC, in collaboration with Euricse and Spatial Foresight, is carrying out the study 'Improving socio-economic knowledge of the Social and Proximity Economy ecosystem - Lot 1: Benchmarking the socio-economic performance of the EU Social Economy'. The study is carried out following a public call for tender launched by the European Innovation Council and SME Executive Agency (EISMEA), a body of the European Commission, and in the framework of the European Action Plan for the Social Economy. The study will provide quantitative and qualitative data, which will contribute to the elaboration of public policies in the field of the Social Economy, and in the context of the European industrial strategy, among others.

KU Leuven University held ICA Committee on Cooperative Research (CCR) Conference

Over 150 participants from across the world gathered at the ICA Committee on Cooperative Research (CCR) Conference “Innovating in cooperative governance. Governing cooperative innovation”, held from 10 to 13 July at the KU Leuven University, Belgium. plenary sessions covered aspects that open new potentialities for cooperative development such as university spin-offs and further analysis on cooperative ecosystems.

UNTFSSE launches open online course to raise awareness of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) and how it can help to achieve the SDGs

Following the historic adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the resolution "Promoting the Social and Solidarity Economy for Sustainable Development" (A/RES/77/281) on 18 April 2023, the UNTFSSE has launched an online course that will enable UN Member States and intergovernmental agencies, UN entities, governments and regional organizations to familiarize themselves with the basic concepts and practices of the SSE, and its central role in promoting inclusive and sustainable development.

European Commission adopts a proposal to facilitate cross-border activities of associations

It will improve the functioning of the Internal Market by removing legal and administrative barriers for non-profit associations that operate or wish to operate in more than one Member State, thus promoting the role non-profit associations play in generating economic and societal values in the EU and allow a level playing field between them.

COODING, first international event for cooperatives on digital and new technologies - Bologna, 29 and 30 September

CECOP invites to Bologna to participate in COODING, an acronym for 'COOperatives Digital Innovation & Networking Growth'. Cooperators will have the opportunity to discuss and improve cooperation around the use of digital and new technologies in line with cooperative principles and values.

European Social Economy Conference in San Sebastian, 13-14 November 2023

As part of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU and San Sebastian's status as the capital of the social economy, a new European conference on the social economy will be held in Donostia-San Sebastian on 13 and 14 November. It is expected to bring together around 2,000 participants from all over Europe and other parts of the world, in person and online, in what is expected to be the most important social economy event of the year.
