The historical momentum of the Social Economy

"The historical momentum that the Social Economy is going through is the result of more than a decade of advocacy and work by women and men in the SE to obtain a long overdue recognition at European and international level. This recognition is very concrete in many countries, but it is also unequal; local, regional and national policies have not yet acquired all the mechanisms necessary for the implementation of the SE ecosystem."

Last call for submissions: IX CIRIEC International Research Conference on Social Economy - Seoul, July 2023

CIRIEC invites you to its 'IX International Research Conference on Social Economy, which will be held from 4 to 6 July 2023 in Seoul (South Korea), at Sungkonghoe University. Researchers interested in presenting papers should submit a abstract of their paper (300 word max) by 31 January 2023. Two awards will be given to the best papers presented at the Conference on SSE’s contribution to SDGs.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, receives Social Economy Europe and CEPES

On 23 January, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, received Social Economy Europe (SEE) and CEPES at the Moncloa Palace, in Madrid, to discuss the key role of the social economy in the framework of European policies and the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, which will take place in the second half of this year.

The European Parliament recognises cooperatives and the social economy in its report on platform work

In December 2022, the European Parliament's Employment and Social Affairs Committee adopted its report on the European Commission's proposal for a directive to improve working conditions in platform work. The report came as a compromise solution after months of intense debates in the European Parliament, and overall represents a strong step forward towards a more level playing field for companies and better working conditions for workers.

Deolinda Meira, winner of the António Sérgio Award for Cooperation and Solidarity 2022

The Cooperativa António Sérgio para a Economia Social (CASES) announced Deolinda Meira, lecturer at the Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto (ISCAP) and researcher at CIRIEC, as Social Economy Personality 2022 - Career Honours Award. The Cooperation and Solidarity António Sérgio Award, created by CASES in 2012, is intended to honour natural and legal persons who, through their career in the management of Social Economy entities, in supporting and boosting the sector, or in teaching, promotion or research in the field of Social Economy, have contributed significantly to its recognition and development.

Mapping the European Work Integration Social Enterprises

In 2017, the European Network of Social Integration Enterprises (ENSIE) started the mapping of European Work Integration Social Enterprises (WISEs) and created its online WISEs database. This map allows to increase the visibility on WISEs’ work and activities and foster a more responsible behavior of producers and consumers.

Philea partners with the World Economic Forum on new initiative to unlock more resources for Climate and Nature

Philea has announced its collaboration with the World Economic Forum on the Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA) global initiative. The project, supported by more than 45 major philanthropic, public and private sector partners, aims to encourage PPPPs to leverage the $3 trillion needed each year from public and private sources to tackle climate change and nature loss.

Newly published: The International Handbook of Social Enterprise Law

This open access book brings together international experts who shed new light on the situation of social enterprises, benefit corporations and other purpose-driven companies. The respective chapters take a multidisciplinary approach (combining law, philosophy, history, sociology and economics) and provide valuable insights into fostering social entrepreneurship and promoting the common good. The book brings together a total of 44 contributions written by 71 expert researchers and practitioners in this field, coordinated by Professors Henry Peter (University of Geneva, Switzerland), Carlos Vargas Vasserot (University of Almeria, Spain), and Jaime Alcalde Silva (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile).
