Cooperatives, one of the most dynamic sector of Moroccan Economy

Moroccan cooperatives, through the video titled “The Social and Solidarity Economy in Morocco: A Booming Development Model”, show how the cooperative sector in Morocco has consolidated in recent years and is emerging as one of the most dynamic pillars of its economy, combining strong quantitative growth with social impact.

The video explains that there are tens of thousands of active cooperatives and hundreds of thousands of people involved—over 40,000 cooperatives and more than 600,000 members according to official 2020 data. The Moroccan cooperative model stands out today for its ability to generate employment, territorial cohesion, and economic opportunities in rural areas.

This development is further reinforced by public policies that view cooperatives as a strategic instrument for inclusive development.

Craftsmanship, Agriculture, and Natural Products

Beyond the numbers, Moroccan cooperative movement excels in its deep connection with local communities and its ability to add value to territorial resources, particularly in sectors such as craftsmanship, natural products, and agriculture.

It also stands out for its role in women’s empowerment and social inclusion. Numerous examples show how cooperatives enable rural women to access income, training, and participation in decision-making, becoming genuine drivers of social change.

The video is accompanied by a descriptive text highlighting the growth of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) in this North African country, where historical traditions are combined with modern strategies to position Morocco as a benchmark in Africa.

Despite its dynamism, it is noted that the sector faces the challenge of legal fragmentation, as it is governed by different regulations for cooperatives, associations, and mutuals. The upcoming approval of a framework law is expected to unify the system and promote coordinated development among public and private actors in Morocco’s social economy.
