Solidarity takes center stage at the 75th anniversary of the International Association of Mutual Benefit Societies

On June 12 and 13, Brussels hosted the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the International Association of Mutual Benefit Societies (AIM), which took place as a Congress and General Assembly under the theme “The Year of Solidarity.” Since its foundation, AIM has worked to democratize areas such as public health, social policy, law, and international cooperation, all within a broad framework of solidarity.

“The meaning of solidarity in 2025 requires continuous reflection,” said AIM President Loek Caubo in his speech, emphasizing that it is the guiding principle behind AIM’s advocacy in Brussels for affordable medicines, thoughtful digitalization, and ambitious climate policies.

“Solidarity connects AIM’s global work—from Africa to the Middle East and Latin America—where mutuals are the driving force of solidarity in action,” he explained.

“Solidarity is not passive; it demands responsibility. ‘Free’ assistance should not lead to waste. The shortage of caregivers may compel us to help our elders. This self-interest ensures that assistance will still be there when we need it,” said Loek Caubo, president of AIM, who also highlighted the organization’s hope in the leadership of young people on issues such as climate change, whom mutuals have the duty to support.

Solidarity, mutual aid, and democratic values were also central themes of the General Assembly, which featured, among others, Seamus Boland, President of the EESC Civil Society Group, who called for building a healthier Europe for the future. Meanwhile, Commissioner Várhelyi expressed his gratitude to AIM for its ongoing contributions to the European Commission’s health-related activities.

In addition, Professor Harald Schmidt argued for a new approach to health, advocating for a radical shift from symptom-based medicine to a more precise model grounded in data and systemic prevention.

Affordability, accessibility, and availability of healthcare

During AIM’s General Assembly, a panel discussion focused on the need to ensure the affordability, accessibility, and availability of healthcare as fundamental pillars of solidarity. Senior representatives from the European Commission and AIM members participated, stressing the importance of fair pricing, reducing inequalities, and enhancing EU cooperation.

Another panel, featuring experts from the ILO and OECD, examined how solidarity translates into real-world coverage, financing, and protection. The discussion focused on expanding social and health protection, particularly for vulnerable people and those in informal employment.

Finally, the intergenerational panel at AIM’s General Assembly highlighted the importance of dialogue between younger and older members to secure the future of mutual societies. Speakers emphasized how intergenerational exchange can strengthen solidarity, generate innovative ideas, and ensure the continuity of mutualist values.
